Belgrade, March 8, 2007
The Outside Project represents an important possibility for our students to develop cultural links with Europe, a way to travel for many Serbian students who have been denied that right over too many years, says Nenad Bogdanovic, the Mayor of Belgrade.
The Protocol signed by the Belgrade and Florentine partners defines
the roles of all institutions involved, including the
Public Education Department of the City of Florence (Assessorato
alla Pubblica Istruzione / Scambi internazionali), the
City of Belgrade, University of Arts in Belgrade, Florence
Academy of Fine Arts, Studio Art Centers International
(SACI) and the Center for International Studies of Arts
(CMUS).

We wish to thank the University of Arts in Belgrade for
their kind letter of support.

Outside program in Florence
Florence, July 2006
This years program, with support of Comune di Firenze,
included the final event at the ex-church of San Carlo
dei Barnabiti and at La Corte Arte Contemporanea gallery.
The building, as appears today, dates back to 1636, when
it was adapted for the Barnabite order. In 1800s, this
space has been transformes into a school, and curently
it is at disposal of the City of Florence (Quarter 1)
as a space for a variety of cultural activities. The building,
however, remains undefined and its cultural function unclear.

International Studies of Art, took place in Belgrade,
May 14-30, with participation of over 30 students from
the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh and Belgrade’s University
of Arts. Lectures and workshops on themes of urban identity
were held in spaces of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Megatrend
University of Art and Design. For the occasion, an unused
space in Belgrade, ex-Turkish Bath, has been adapted for
events, including a concert and the final students show.
The Culture Department of the City of Belgrade has given
generous support to the program, by providing the funding
for students accommodation.
In collaboration with Serbian Recycling Agency, a large
quantity of recyclable materials was obtained for sculptural
and design projects. Multimedia facilities of the Megatrend
University were used for video and digital works. Students
radio shows were held at the local radio station (SKC
Radio). A special workshop, by the Florentine artist Lorenzo
Pezzatini, was organized at the Institute for mentally
challenged children and youth in Sremcica, in the vicinity
of Belgrade. Lecturers came from all participating institutions,
as well as by invitation, as confirmed experts in their
fields, such as Edoardo Malagigi, art director of Children’s
Emergency Foundation, Michelle Illuminato from Carnegie
Mellon, Irina Subotic, University of Novi Sad, Nikola
Suica Belgrade University of Arts, Stevan Vukovic, Students
Cultural Center, Maria Antonia Rinaldi, SACI - Florence, Tanja Ostojic, artist living in Berlin

Center for International Studies of Art, consisted in
building a huge Pinocchio out of several tons of consumable
goods of long conservation, such as powder milk, pastry,
canned vegetables and meat, sugar, flour, oil etc. The
list of products represents two months of supplies needed
by the largest Belgrade orphanage which was actually the
receiver of this aid. The exhibition was inaugurated by
the Italian ambassador in Belgrade, Mr. Sandro Merola.
Other event, Guide, by the US artists group Next Question,
in collaboration with Kim Beck, consisted in collecting
a variety of information on Belgrade, in collaboration
with many local and visiting students of art, in order
to create a unique guide book made of general facts and
individual memories.
